What’s the largest moving object in your home? Your garage door. The overhead door will weigh between 150 and 350 pounds and this thing is hanging above you, your children and your car. If it fails, there can be major consequences that you don’t want to deal with. Doing a yearly tune-up can reduce chances of failure greatly, so what do you do?
- Tighten loose bolts. -There are approximately 80 bolts on your garage door, go through and tighten up each bolt, many times you will find 3-5 bolts about to fall out. This is the most important thing to do yearly
- Look for bad rollers (wheels). -Rollers are what hold the most weight and they wear out over the years. Here is a picture of a good roller:

Notice the angle of the wheel. Visual checking in the up position seems to be best.
- Lastly: spray lubricant in the roller and on the hinges to quiet noise and increase lifespan of roller and hinges. Do not spray lubricant in the track. A small amount goes a long way.
